Domaine de Beaurenard’s red Rhône blend is a wine Jonathan and I drank in the past and really enjoyed. I failed to write about it the first time or note the vintage. Although, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a 2005. We were eager to sample this wine again, but I was a little disappointed I didn’t have notes from the first time to compare our tastings.

This was round two for us with the Domaine Gautier. Our local wine store suggested this wine to us as a, “remarkably smooth and complex wine for a modest price tag.” After tasting the wine for the first time, Jonathan took these notes, “drank with spinach-stuffed chicken…..delicious dusty taste….even better after decanting….definitely plan to have again.” Saturday night we were looking for an easy drinking wine to enjoy while watching a movie and pulled Domaine Gautier from the wine cooler.

This was one of those spontaneous buys that could have turned out badly. I love bold, spicy wines, and when I saw this one, The Pepper Pot, I grabbed it despite the name and silly pot on the front of the bottle. With a name like The Pepper Pot, it had to be spicy. Right?

At a recent wine tasting, Jonathan and I tried Viña Palo Alto Reserva 2007. Neither of us were blown away, what do you expect for $8.00? For the price, we decided to grab a few bottles. If nothing else, it could be our second bottle one evening. Trying to decide what bottle to open one evening, I suggested opening a bottle of the Viña Palo Alto Reserva 2007. I wanted to decant the wine since it was young to see if this would make a difference.

Our immediate reaction to this wine was, “Wow, that’s one of the best wines we’ve had in a while.” Jonathan and I were on a streak of drinking bad or not so great wines for the last two weeks. It was time for a good one! We spotted this one at our favorite wine shop in town for an unbelievable price. We picked it up on a whim because of the price and our recent interest in Spanish wines. After tasting Luzon, it’s one we’ll purchase again.
