Choosing the Right Bottle of Wine
My friend Laura gave me this blog idea several months ago, and I’ve really just procrastinated on getting it done. I like to say that I needed more time for “research.” The arrival of the cool, fall weather has totally motivated me and I’ve been busy conducting “research”
So we always think about the perfect wine pairings for food, but what about first dates, evenings by the fire or catching the big game? Here are some of my suggestions for choosing the perfect bottle of wine.
First Dates: These are always nerve-wracking, but be confidant in your wine selection. If your date enjoys wine consider ordering a bottle, otherwise select a wine by the glass. Select a varietal you’re familiar with….this isn’t time to experiment. My tip, choose a mid-priced wine, not the most expensive but not the cheapest wine on the list. Also, think about a sparkling wine. There doesn’t have to be a celebration to order a glass of Champagne, and it will be a unique move that stands out in your date’s mind.
Evenings by the Fire: Fall is here and I love this time of year. The cool weather, pumpkins, spice and warm fires. I’m a huge fan of Rhône reds when sitting by the fire on a cool evening. The earthy, rustic wines produced from blends of Syrah, Grenache and Mouvedre are a perfect match for me. My second selection would be a Rioja red. Many of the same grapes are grown here along with Tempranillo, and the wines are a great value.
Watching the Sunset: One of the most memorable days of this past summer was picnicking on the shores of Lake Michigan. Jonathan and I picked up a few snacks and bottles of Roséand Vinho Verde to watch one of the most incredible sunsets I’ve ever seen. I opt for lighter wines since many of the sunsets we watch are over the summer. These are cool and refreshing.
Catching the big game: I’m not a beer drinker. So even while watching a football game, I choose to drink wine. Depending on what I’m in the mood for, I opt for a white or red Burgundy. Both of these are very drinkable and quite enjoyable without a food pairing. If it happens to be a morning game, bring on the Spanish Cava. I think Cava is the perfect brunch or pre-noon beverage. There are several quality bottles of Cava at inexpensive prices.
Dinner with Co-workers: This can be a little tricky. Unless your longtime friends with your co-workers and know them outside the office, most importantly don’t drink too much. Again if your co-workers enjoy wine consider sharing a bottle, otherwise select a wine by the glass. Pick something you like to drink or a variety you enjoy. The key to remember is the amount you drink.

Love the recommendations!!! Good job “researching” E! I’m going to try out each recommendation soon

Pingback by Choosing the Right Bottle of Wine by Erica « Bluberry Cobbler — October 23, 2009 @ 9:50 AMA great idea for some blogging material…I wonder if this has ever been done for WBW? Hmm…have to think of some ideas.
I love the sparkling wine recommendation, as that is a personal pet peeve with me, the fact people igorne sparklers except for New Year’s, weddings, graduations and other celebratory events. Hey, opening a bottle of bubbly IS THE CELEBRATION! And why not on a first date…what a great tale to tell the grandkids if it turns into the fairytale and if nothing else, it will be memorable.
A great Cava for the money is Segura Viudas Brut Reserva. I pay $6.50 for it and it rocks.
Kevin:
Glad you enjoyed the post. I, too, love the bubbly and don’t think it’s enjoyed enough. I pop a bottle whenever I can, even if it’s a Wednesday!
Cheers!
